Lots happening here at Sonic Deli Records; took a couple of months to recharge, to revamp the studio and plan for new projects in 2012. Yes, there is a new Jim Armstrong album in the works, some shows coming up, a couple of new video and broadcast ventures, and working with a couple of special charities - but we can't tell you all the secrets just yet! Here are a couple of teasers to keep you guessing in the meantime - "Jimmy Dimes" and "Beginnings"...

If you find yourself in the greater Toronto area this Friday, January 27th, please come on out to The Moonshine Cafe's 6th Anniversary Party - 137 Kerr Street, Oakville, Ontario - 905-844-2655. RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED. 9:00pm $7 cover. Jim Armstrong & The Sonic Deli Band and GCDC will knock your socks off. The Moonshine Cafe is one of the best music venues in Canada. Come help celebrate!

May 16, 2011

Things are topsy turvey here at Sonic Deli Records - Jim Armstrong and the recording studio are moving to a new location (just round the corner) but it's keeping everyone pretty busy packing! So we'll keep this short.

Songs from Jim's new album, Junction Road continue to receive airplay all over the world via podcasts, internet radio, college radio....too numerous to list them all in this message, but we will post the links on the website soon.

Jim and Junction Road also received another two excellent reviews - one from Real Roots Cafe in the Netherlands - here's the link to it - it's in Dutch so we'll post a translation on our site shortly.

And Maverick Country Magazine in the UK gave Junction Road "4.5 out of 5 stars" in the June 2011 issue. Here is the review in it's entirety:

Utterly exhilarating that literally stops you in your tracks.
Recovery for Toronto-based Jim Armstrong has been a long and winding one. Having released his debut album MUDTOWN in 2007 Jim had planned on releasing a follow-up two years later but an unfortunate accident happened after a co-worker** brandished a manual forklift at him therefore leaving him with horrific injuries that require Jim to wear metal ring splints on his fretting hand. This has not ceased Jimīs musical plans as this record proves with all the energy and talent of someone with wisdom beyond his years. Consisting of fourteen songs, there are many wonderful tunes to choose from but if one had to be selected above the others it would be Sanctify. With a tender gospel opening, this then opens up into an explosive track of pure ecstasy. The roaring vocals are stonking* and give the song that extra special something that sees you yearning for more. A follow up to this excellent album? I hope so. ~ Russell Hill

*Stonking
Adj. 1. Impressively large.
2. An intensifier, E.g."Yeah, we had a stonking good time."
** not a co-worker but a store employee where Jim was shopping.

February 9, 2011

The 2 Kens host not only a great weekly comedy show You Can't Make It Up they also do a wonderful monthly show called Club Indie - an in-depth interview with a musical guest and their songs. This month features none other than - Jim Armstrong. Thank you Ken and Ken for a terrific time and helping to tell the world about Jim and his music.

Ken D., 2Kens Comedy Club Indie & YCMIU: "The best music is that which connects to the listener on an emotional level and if that is the standard, then Jim Armstrongīs music is among the very best. Heīs overcome more adversity in his life than anyone should have to bear, and perhaps as a result, many of his songs celebrate everyday people who have beaten the odds and overcome hurdles of their own. Plus, his music is just plain enjoyable to listen to - so, enjoy!"

Host Joe Chisholm of Indiecan Radio has Jim Armstrong standing in the line-up rubbing shoulders with Blue Rodeo and Matt Mays & El Torpedo on episode #210 with tunes "One Day At A Time" and "Joanne" and Joe says some great things about Junction Road that bear repeating:

Joe Chisholm, IndieCan Radio: "Junction Road is a transporter ride from the front porch, to behind the wheel of the car, to a time long, long ago, to afternoon tea with your own conscience. Itīs a well written Americana meets Rock `nī Roll ride from start to finish."

Unc keeps showing the love! He's spinning Jim tunes on episodes #1075, #1079 and #1080 Here's a little mash-up of quotes from Uncle Shag at WLSO.FM & Longtown Sound:

Uncle Shag, WLSO.FM & Longtown Sound: "Here we are at the end of 2010 and Jim Armstrong is kicking high with the drop of a new CD, Junction Road and with a heart pumping strength in his vocals rivaling The Boss and Neil Young and at times a mix of Mel Torme and Bill Murray for sheer will to be. ...I listen to a LOT of music and it's always a joy when ALL the cuts on a CD are gems and Jim Armstrong has it in his CD, Junction Road."

Here's a quote from another great review of Junction Road, this time from Belgium's RootsTime. This is an English translation (see the original on their website) And read the *entire review in English below the fold:

Valsam, RootsTime.be: "Jim Armstrong may take some time in getting new work out on the market, but if the quality of all his work is as high as it is on "Junction Road" we can only admire this approach and conclude that this Canadian multi-instrumentalist should have his work labelled "pretty damn good stuff": an absolute must for all the loyal fans of the best roots rock and Americana music."

And how about this terrific quote - thanks Keith :)

Keith Ross Leckie, Emmy and Gemini award-winning writer/producer (Lost In The Barrens, Journey Into Darkness, The Arrow, Coppermine): "Always a great fan of Jim's music, I find this new album "Junction Road" begins where "Mudtown" left off and sets a new standard. The band has never been tighter and the arrangements bring out their best, but what is superlative on this album is the lyrics. Jim creates stories and characters, strong visual images and metaphors that make you feel like you've just watched a dramatic movie in your head, all in three and a half minutes. "David and Jenny", "Worn Out Shoes" and "Breaker's Point" are good examples. "Dollars In His Wallet" is just a classic display of Jim's hard driving rock and roll. Congratulations Jim. Whatever is inspiring you, don't let it stop!"

Meanwhile Jim's song "Dollars In His Wallet" has a spin on both The Netherlands' Paul van Gelder's nationally syndicated radio WOLD podcast and Bill Frater's Freight Train Boogie podcast #105 .

Pre-production has begun with the talented gang from Workshed Entertainment on music videos for the Junction Road songs, "Joanne" and "Sanctify". Stay tuned for more details!

NEXT SHOW: Thursday, February 24th - Cadillac Lounge - 1300 Queen Street West - early show! 8:00 - 11:00 pm - Cover: PWYC - Jim Armstrong & The Sonic Deli Band.

***PLEASE NOTE - Thursday, February 17th show - cancelled

* English translation of RootsTime.be JUNCTION ROAD review

Jim Armstrong is a singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer from Toronto, Canada who has been inspired and influenced in writing and recording his own songs by those great American rockers like Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Tom Petty and John Hiatt.

In August 2007 you could have read a positive review written by our boss, Freddy about his debut album "Mudtown" and many other reviewers subsequently endorsed the good taste of our editor. The rocking country sound of Jim Armstrong was welcomed by the majority of the roots music community and left us all looking forward to a sequel to "Mudtown".

That drop has only now come with the new album "Junction Road". Like its predecessor, the lead guitar on this album is played by Kenji Miura those contributions were recorded in a studio in Osaka, Japan, and then sent to Toronto where Jim Armstrong mixed the tracks with the other recorded instruments in his Sonic Deli Records' studio. Well, we are now in the year 2011 and modern technology has arrived.

There is very fine country rock music on this album as well as a couple of alt.country ballads all equally well sung by Jim Armstrong. "Darlin ", "The Devil's Song" and "Breakers Point" are such handsome examples of songwriting craftsmanship by a strong songwriter with an ear for catchy melodies and rhythmic tunes such as "Lost Again" and "Whiskey Song".

The tempo is also held tight in pure rockers like "Dollars In His Wallet", "One Day At A Time" and the John Hiatt bluesy sounding rockers "David And Jenny " and "When I Kiss You". Phil Manning provides the rocking Hammond organ on a few songs "Joanne" and "Walk Alone" as well as that classic sound in the wonderfully beautiful ballad "Sanctify".

Jim Armstrong may take some time in getting new work out on the market, but if the quality of all his work is as high as it is on "Junction Road" we can only admire this approach and conclude that this Canadian multi-instrumentalist should have his work labelled "pretty damn good stuff": an absolute must for all the loyal fans of the best roots rock and Americana music. (Valsam)

January 22, 2011

Not too long ago we opened the door* and sent Jim Armstrong's Junction Road out into the world. Now here come the postcards and love letters in ever-increasing numbers and we couldn't be more pleased.

Uncle Shag and The Longtown Sound over at WLSO.FM continue in their unwavering support playing Jim's One Day At A Time on Pancake Wednesday Flour Power Hour episode #1068 and Foolish Crime on Weekend Power Hour episode #1069. Says Uncle Shag: "This is Jim Armstrong at his rocking "Boss" best, in "One Day At A Time". Loving the CD Junction Road". Oh, and this just in - Jim's When I Kiss You is on Longtown Sound's Weekend Edition episode #1072.

On You Can't Make It Up (and we didn't - it's true!) discerning radio hosts, Americans Ken and Ken featured Jim Armstrong's Dollars In His Wallet and Worn Out Shoes on episode #125 Classy Cabbies. This is a wonderfully funny show and we're now big fans. The 2 Kens (check out their impressive "about" page) also host a monthly in-depth interview with a featured musical guest on their other show, Club Indie. Jim was interviewed for a forthcoming Club Indie episode and we'll keep you apprised of the broadcast date (looks like February!)

Canada's John Vermilyea of Blues Underground Network gives Jim Armstrong and Junction Road 5***** in this fantastic review. Here are a few choice snippets: "The first 3 tracks off "Junction Rd." will no doubt yank you off your seat and pull you up to the dance floor, from there on the spell that is Jim Armstrong's music will have already captivated you and any chance of retreat, will not only be futile, but it will also be unwanted. As you travel on through "Junction Rd.", you will steadily gain a profound appreciation, not only for the immense musical talent displayed on this album, but also for the immense lyrical talent which Jim Armstrong possesses. You will be taken through life's highest highs and lowest lows, with the over riding theme being one's ability to adapt and triumph in the end...I highly recommend "Junction Rd."...5*****."

Says Joe Chisholm of Canada's IndieCan Radio: "Junction Road is a transporter ride from the front porch, to behind the wheel of the car, to a time long, long ago, to afternoon tea, to a date with your own conscience. It's a well written Americana meets Rock 'n' Roll ride from start to finish."

From The Netherlands comes this great review (the link takes you to the original review in Dutch. For some truly hilarious fun, try using an online language translator!) However, thanks to Stephen Cohrs of Trinity Tube Amps we were able to have a few of his Dutch speaking customers finesse the English translation. For the full version** see the bottom of this update. Here's a quote:

Johan Schoenmakers, AltCountryForum.nl: "The style of "Junction Road is a crossover between old country music, Americana and Altcountry. It is a fine album with one good tune after another...In short: Strong and catchy songs, fine musicians and a beautiful production - "Junction Road" by Jim Armstrong has it all."

And finally we now have a new Jim Armstrong Reverbnation fanpage. Or if you prefer - Facebook, CBC Radio 3, OurStage and Myspace. Junction Road can be purchased on iTunes or CD Baby.

Next Show: Thursday, February 17th at The Cadillac Lounge - An early one as it's a "school night" 8:30-11:00pm.

*English translated review below:

* Johan Schoenmakers, AltCountryForum.nl:

The journey of life, from birth to death, is a very personal experience. For one it might be a breeze, someone else might run into bad luck often. Gifted multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and Canadian Jim Armstrong has been tormented by life. As a child he survived encephalitis followed by years of epileptic seizures and brain surgery. To make matters worse, a forklift permanently damaged all the fingers of his left hand. After this unfortunate accident he had to learn to play the guitar all over again.

On Jim's new CD "Junction Road", which was released in the last week of 2010, he takes credit for not only all the songwriting and vocals but also much of the electric guitar, mandolin and keyboards. Heīs backed up by Alvin Lapp (drums), Jeff Beauchamp (bass guitar and upright bass), Kenji Miura (electric guitar) and Phil Manning (Hammond B3).

The style of "Junction Road" is a crossover between old country music, Americana and Altcountry. It is a very nice album with one good tune after another. Catchy rhythms and familiar melodies - a delightful twang record. That relaxed style, pleasant mood and Jimīs vocals work perfectly on this album.

With a nagging hammond organ (Sanctify), and some chilli peppers between the guitar strings for some intense playing (Dollars In His Wallet), the listener is completely and unconditionally taken in by the looseness of the songs. Songs like "One Day At A Time", and "David and Jenny" are tight and uncomplicated with high "Sing-Along" potential. They have only one goal: to make you bounce up from the couch, invite all your friends, and then rock out to this captivating music with the whole gang. Indestructible Americana.

The most obvious criticism is of course the fact that "Junction Road" sounds very solid and reliable, not necessarily ground breaking. But there is nothing wrong with that and this isn't to be taken negatively in the case of Jim Armstrong.

In short: Strong and catchy songs, great musicians and a very beautiful production - "Junction Road" by Jim Armstrong has it all.

January 10, 2011

Well now, 2011 is off to a great start for all things Deli, sonically speaking ;)

In case you missed it - Jim's Armstrong's new album JUNCTION ROAD is out! Find it here on itunes or over here at CD Baby.

Jim's hellbilly hit, Dollars In His Wallet is currently featured in the front page music player over at NO DEPRESSION (the granddaddy site of all things Roots & Americana!) - scroll down their homepage to the bottom and treat yourself to a musical smorgasboard.

And then of course you'll still be hungry and that's when you must treat yourself to a double helping of PANCAKE WEDNESDAY FLOUR POWER HOUR over at WLSO.FM to hear Uncle Shag's choice offerings served up on the Longtown Sound podcasts. Episode 1063 kicks off with such an amazing intro about us and Jim's music and his new track, Darlin' that we were fair near to blushin'! Then dang if Uncle Shag didn't bring Jim and his song Sanctify back the following week for a second helping on episode 1065. And - wait for it - third time's the charm as Unc spins Worn Out Shoes on Longtown Sound's WEEKEND POWER HOUR episode 1067.

Meanwhile, our friend Jersey Joe chose Jim's Foolish Crime as the Pick to Click for the week of January 4, 2011 and the Indie Music Sampler has added Worn Out Shoes to their internet radio playlist and introduces the song on podcast episode 216.

We recently posted a new video of Jim and the Sonic Deli Band having some fun with a song (Utopia) at Epilepsy Toronto's Holday Feast. Jim has yet to release the studio version of this crowd pleasing tune and whenever he performs it live he changes up the story line a little bit; sometimes darker, sometimes not. Check it out here.

Finally some "music to our ears" with a great testimonial all the way from Spain!

"Joaquin Lopez Diaz, rock and Roll Circus, Spain: "Junction Road" is up in my list of favourite albums of 2010 in the Americana/Roots genre. Classic, mature, sensitive songwriting from a true fighter in life and REAL Rock'n'Roll. In a perfect world songs like "When I Kiss You" would be monster radio hits. PURE MAGIC. "Sanctify" sends me shivers at the spine. Graham Parker would die for this ballad. "Dollars In His Wallet" is cowpunk to the bone, hillbilly mayhem. I love the whole album - I think it is one of the best Americana/Roots pieces of the year. Classic stuff."

Lots more coming - reviews and radio spins so stay tuned for more exciting announcements.

December 18, 2010

Jim Armstrong's much anticipated album, JUNCTION ROAD (Sonic Deli Records, 2010) is now available for purchase online at CD Baby and is also available at iTunes and other digital distributors. Advance copies of JUNCTION ROAD were previously available for purchase only at live shows.

Thank you for your continued support and for all the well-wishes to Jim as he's endured a difficult past 2 years after his left hand fingers (fretting hand) were permanently injured in an accident.

This injury contributed to the delay of the release date, but has in no way lessened the quality of the music on this album - Jim delivers! And he's had exceptionally fine backing musicians on-board to help him do this. Collectively known as the Sonic Deli Band, the members are comprised of drummer, Alvin Lapp; bassist Jeff Beauchamp; lead guitarist, Kenji Miura aka Kenmi Chank and lead/rhythm guitarist, Val Oddo. Special guest, Phil Manning provides Hammond B3 and additional keys. Together they have made JUNCTION ROAD a stand-out musical journey for the listener - enjoy.

Jim Armstrong

Superb songwriting served on an Alt-Country/Rock platter and garnished with a little Roots, Americana and AC

The road from birth to death is a unique journey that everyone must travel and some of us have smoother, easier paths than others. Jim Armstrong's journey has been one filled with much adversity. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer-songwriter, Jim has lived with severe epilepsy since surviving encephalitis as a child. Years of seizures, medications, even brain surgery - Jim has lived through it all with an incredible inner strength and a sense of humour which colours and defines his music and songwriting.

After Jim's well-received debut album, 2007's MUDTOWN, he began writing and recording new material with the intention of releasing another album in 2009. However things took a different, more difficult turn when Jim, while out shopping, was knocked to the ground by a store employee wielding a manual forklift. The resulting injury has been another life-altering hurdle for Jim. His left hand fingers (fretting hand) are now permanently damaged requiring him to wear metal ring splints on them 24/7. No longer able to play some instruments and having to relearn and adapt to playing others, it has a been a long and painful journey for Jim to complete his new album, JUNCTION ROAD (2010, Sonic Deli Records).

"Where rock meets twang" befits Jim's musical style; a seamless blend of Rock, Roots, Americana and Alt-Country genres that comprise the 14 tracks on JUNCTION ROAD. Jim's songs are compelling; with catchy, hooky melodies and sometimes deceptively dark lyrics. He frequently sings of hard luck stories peopled with underdogs and all their small defeats and triumphs. Notable songs include the giddy, high-energy "Dollars In His Wallet", the sweetly sad and nostalgic "Worn Out Shoes", darkly brooding "Joanne" and a rousing "Walk Alone". Whether dynamically uptempo or slow and thoughtful all 14 songs on Junction Road have a sense of Jim's enduring spirit and strong social consciousness.

Writing, arranging, singing, playing, recording and producing his own material, Jim also enlists the talent of his exceptionally fine backing musicians, collectively known as the Sonic Deli Band. SDB is comprised of drummer, Alvin Lapp; bassist Jeff Beauchamp; lead guitarist, Kenji Miura aka Kenmi Chank and lead/rhythm guitarist, Val Oddo. Special guest, Phil Manning provides Hammond B3 and additional keys. Together they have made JUNCTION ROAD a stand-out musical journey for the listener - enjoy.

Jim Armstrong is the core and catalyst of The Sonic Deli Inc / Sonic Deli Records, a Toronto-based music production house and independent record label. A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer and producer, Armstrong began his musical career as a touring drummer at the age of 10. Over the past three decades, his work has included live performances, radio play, extensive songwriting with and for a number of artists, recording, engineering, arranging and producing independent commercial releases.

Together with his songwriting and business partner, Andrea Poulis, who has a background in film production, Jim Armstrong composes independent film scores and the two of them have an extensive publishing catalogue available for film and television licensing.
