Sonic Deli Records presents the third annual benefit concert in support of Epilepsy Toronto. All proceeds will benefit Epilepsy Toronto, www.epilepsytoronto.org.
A non-profit community agency, Epilepsy Toronto is celebrating their 52nd Anniversary this March, during National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Three hundred thousand Canadians struggle with epilepsy and Sonic Deli Records partner Jim Armstrong is one of them. He has coped with it since age six, undergone state-of-the-art brain surgery to reduce seizures and continues to be a "genuine hero, an inspiration to all who are faithful to their art." - Andy Frank, CIUT. A gifted singer-songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Jim was right back at the soundboard working on his first CD compilation, only three months after his surgery. The project was released in April of 2005, and Brown Bag Lunch, a collection of songs by eleven Toronto artists, marked the beginning of independent record label, Sonic Deli Records.
The multi-faceted Armstrong has had much success since Sonic Deli launched his solo debut, the alt-roots-rock album, Mudtown last May, drawing comparisons to the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Randy Bachman and Steve Earle. He has composed music for many independent feature and corporate films and his more recent song "Sanctuary" has even been included in the soundtrack of episode nine of the new CBC prime time television series, MVP; The Secret Lives of Hockey Wives. He writes songs about real characters from everyday life, the working class hero, and sings them with the passion of a defender of the underdog. The Sonic Deli Band, which provides a more than solid foundation for that passion, includes the incredibly talented and seasoned Wes Miller on bass, drummer Alvin Lapp, (who did a 3 year stint with Buddy Guy among many others), and Phil Kane (better known as the Windsor Twister), on lead guitar.
Named after an Ontario agricultural fair in Schomberg, (their hometown), The Schomberg Fair (Matt Bahen, Nathan Sidon and Jake Stewart describe themselves as "3 handsome assholes"), do it best live. Engaging and upbeat performances of their came-by-it-honestly rural speed-gospel/folk-punk keep audiences rowdy, just the way they like it. Fast on the heels of their debut CD Pickup Full of Empties in 2006, the lads will be releasing a second CD this April at the legendary Horsehoe Tavern.
Sonic Deli Records and guest artists continue to support the goals of Epilepsy Toronto, raising awareness and bringing hope and inspiration to others.

Hard to believe that 2007 is coming to an end (already?!?) and it's been quite the year for us. Think that we shall fondly refer to 2007 as "The Launch Of All Things Mudtown".
Since the release of Jim Armstrong's CD, Mudtown last May, it has been added to the playlists of over 60 terrestrial, satellite and internet radio stations and podcasts with more to come. To date, we've received 15+ great reviews in a number of countries, plus 2 soundtrack placements with more licensing opps. to announce soon.
Jim and his Sonic Deli Band also appeared live on 3 CIUT 89.5 FM radio programs, played a number of shows and events - including NXNE - with many more coming up in 2008.
Here are the latest announcements:
Jim Armstrong's song, Happier Timeshas been included in the soundtrack for a promotional video for Canadian Music Week (CMW) 2008. The video, created and produced by the cool people of Bohagey Bowes, also includes music by fellow Canadians, Amanda Rheaume, Knocker Pot, Id Guinness and Carey Ott.
Expect to see the video on CMW's website very soon http://www.cmw.net and in the meantime, check it out here www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESCWZ7YMfoU.
Earlier this year, we told you that another Mudtown track, Hole In His Heart was licensed for All Along; a movie by Robert Angelo Masciantonio. The film recently received an Honorable Mention for Best Feature at The Myrtle Beach International Film Festival (finished 2nd in the category) and is now entered into the The Beverly Hills HD Film Festival (Dec 27-Jan 7). More info here www.allalongfilm.com.
Mudtown was recently added to the playlist of The Promise; Live365.com. Here's their excellent mini review;
"Jim Armstrong - Mudtown (2007)
Straight from the heartland... You know... Toronto, Canada. With his slightly gravely voice and straight ahead attack, this is rock and roll that makes you think of Mellencamp or even Melissa. If you close your eyes you can see these guys playing live in a small club opening for someone, when they really should be the main attraction. Good songwriting. Good sense of rock and roll. Find out more at Sonic Deli Records (love that name). "
If you love and support independent music, please take the time to check out a couple of our favourite shows:
The Soupy Gato Show (frequently voted the #1 Podcast here - please vote too if you agree!) Plus, you may request a Jim Armstrong tune anytime, as Soupy Gato's Daniel J does regular request shows.
And our homegrown fave, IndieCan Radio. The gang at IndieCan recently put out the word to call upon fellow artists/musicians/listeners to help:
"Over 30,000 listened to Episode 63. We would like 64,000 to listen to Episode 64 and 100,000 to hear # 65. So this week we ask you to get the word out. Ask your friends to tell their friends to join us. Our goal is to give these great do-it-yourself recording artists the scope of audience they deserve. This really is community radio - of the people for the people. "
Pass the torch. http://www.indiecan.com

There are a number of international music reviews pending of MUDTOWN; here is a brief mention on AMERICANA HOME PLACE:
"Mudtown is the debut release from Toronto singer-songwriter Jim Armstrong. Armstrong mixes a retro blues-rock foundation with Americana sensibilities. Reminiscent of the work of John Hiatt and fellow Canadian Fred Eaglesmith, Armstrong´s music has a gritty, earnest edge for fans who enjoy the rockin´ side of Americana."
Here is great mini-review of MUDTOWN on Chip Frazier´s excellent music blog, AMBER WAVES OF TWANG. Chip´s reviews are also posted on another terrific music site, TWANGVILLE. You may read the entire article here and below is the excerpt:
"Jim Armstrong - Toronto based singer - Songwriter Jim Armstrong makes his debut with Mudtown He is an accomplished producer who has worked with number of independent Canadian artists. Although the comparison may not be fair, He is clearly influenced by John Hiatt. After working all of these years with other artists he is finally releasing a solo album of his own. In fact to call it a solo album is an understatement since Armstrong wrote or Co-wrote all of the songs, produced the album and played most of the instruments himself. The result of this tightly controlled process is an infectious hook laden Americana album."
Kelly Dearmore also writes an excellent review of MUDTOWN on his music blog, THE GOBBLERS KNOB:
"A couple of days ago, I wrote about Canadian Kathleen Edwards. Then I read about other Canadian acts that are a little country and a little rock and roll. Today, I make my daily trek over to the Waves of Twang that are Amber in Color and see that he is also becoming more enamored with our chilly neighbors to the north. While we are all in the mood to inform folks about the many ways in which Canada rocks, I would like to also agree that Jim Armstrong´s latest CD, Mudtown is a worthy listen. Artist like him seem to fall into a group with early Steve Earle, Chris Knight, and even John Mellencamp when he isn´t singin´ about how trucks prove to the world that this is indeed "Our Country". I have never quite jived with such groupings, however. Chris Knight continues to bellow dark, gothic tunes of murder and betrayal while he stays as far away from the mainstream as he seemingly can. Early Earle is a far cry from the latest incarnation of the Hard-Core Troubadour, and like I said earlier Mellencamp is belting out jingles these days. I concur with Chip´s John Hiatt comparison over any other attempt to offer fans of a certain artist a suitable alternative. What struck me the most about Mudtown was how the disc seemed to effortlessly transition from bluesy-rockers like "Heaven Only Knows" and softer, more thoughtful alt-country tunes such as "I´m Coming Home". This disc was released on Sonic Deli Records, in which Armstrong is a key player..." read the original here.

And this excellent review of MUDTOWN written by Bert Gagnon of Neon Radio Productions & Musictogousa.com
"Jim Armstrong's "Mudtown" cd has long been awaited by many of his fans and for good reason. This artist has demonstrated precision and technical expertise beyond what is expected coupled with strong songwriting skills that transcends his chosen genre of Americana. Mudtown's eclectic styling incorporates some of music's best genres, Americana/Roots/Rock and Jim also throws splashes of Blues into this five star cd. Even though this cd has eclectic qualities, it remains within context, as there isn't any element that competes against each other. So what you hear is extremely high quality songs that you will certainly enjoy for a long time. Key tracks are "Heaven Only Knows", "Mudtown", "Hole In His Heart" and "Rhythm Of The Moon". Even though this is Jim Armstrong's first solo album, Jim is no novice to the music arena and it is very apparent as he has hit a homerun his first time out. Here is another artist that will be on our playlists for many years. Here´s the original:
So many new Radio Stations & Podcast Shows have added (or are about to add) songs from Jim Armstrong's album, Mudtown to their playlists. Please treat your ears and check some of them out. Finally, here´s an English translation kindly provided by Johanna J. Bodde of the www.altcountry.nl review of Mudtown by Rene Leverink:
Translation review AltCountryNL
Jim Armstrong "Mudtown"
"An old soul, wet behind the ears. The freshman veteran rookie old
timer of the year." I couldn't track down HOW old Jim Armstrong is
exactly, but he's indeed getting gray already and yet "Mudtown" is his
debut album. Jim Armstrong is a singer-songwriter,
multi-instrumentalist and producer, all of this for several decades.
He runs -together with Andrea Poulis- the Toronto based indie label
Sonic Deli Records. Finally he found the time to make his own CD. And
let's not beat around the bush: "Mudtown" is a beautiful record, and
one would ask why it had to take so long before Armstrong dared to do
his own thing.
The first track "Heaven Only Knows" hits the target immediately, with
a deep slurring electric guitar, that sucks us inexorably into the wet
misery of New Orleans: "Through windows of broken glass I was outside
looking in at a kingdom made of sand; where the cities flood and
desert begins". Steaming soul, stamping rock and thrilling blues in
one package. Immediately thereafter prize track two follows: title
song "Mudtown", that presented itself to Armstrong during his long
walks through Toronto, with his two huge German shepherds Seizure and
Dolby. Toronto, where life isn't easy, but it always offers
opportunities: "This is no paradise, but there's possibility. A man
could plant himself here."
Well, also otherwise Armstrong knows very well how to put an album
together, how to do almost the whole accompaniment by his lonesome,
and when to ask for a real specialist, like Kenji Miura on electric
guitar in "Heaven Only Knows" and "When It Rains", a prize track
AGAIN, damn!

JIM ARMSTRONG CD RELEASE CONCERT FOR "MUDTOWN" -THE CADILLAC LOUNGE, 1296 QUEEN STREET W, 8PM
Thursday March 29th, 2007 - TORONTO - Jim Armstrong releases his debut full-length CD through Sonic Deli Records on Thursday May 10th at the Cadillac Lounge, 1296 Queen Street West. Doors open at 7:30pm, with an opening set by Grainne Ryan starting at 8pm. Jim Armstrong will perform two shows. Early show begins at 8:30pm, late show starts at 10pm. Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling 416.535.5896.
"Mudtown" music is catchy, straight-ahead alt-roots-rock that shoots from the hip and aims at the heart. The title and driving spirit of the disk were born during Jim's wanderings through downtown Toronto, where he lives, works and walks his dogs. Jim explains that "Life can be dirty, rough and mean, but there's a breed of people who struggle against the grind and somehow keep their humanity. They don't get hard, like the city, and that's what makes Mudtown liveable."
"Jim is a genuine hero, an inspiration to all who are faithful to their art." - (Andy Frank, CIUT) He defends the underdog through his music by dispelling the modern myth of perfection. This is an album that the working class will understand. He writes songs about real characters from everyday life and sings their stories with the passion of a Springsteen or Eaglesmith.
Jim Armstrong will be joined on stage by his full band, Wes Miller (bass), Alvin Lapp (drums), Rob Maurin (backing vocals and rhythym), Phil Kane (Lead guitar) and Debbie Shessel (backing vocals).

July 13- News Update-
NEW INDIE MUSIC HOTSPOT, MONTHLY SHOWCASE SERIES
AT STONES PLACE, 1255 QUEEN ST. W., WEDNESDAY, JULY 26th, 9:30 PM
July 12th - Toronto, ON - Sonic Deli Records presents Indie Wednesdays at Stones Place (1255 Queen Street West) on Wednesday, July 26th, 9:30 p.m. This is a new monthly music series that showcases local and touring artists and songwriters from all genres on the last Wednesday of every month. Hosted by The Jim Armstrong Band, the July installment also includes The Droops and These Electric Lives. Music begins at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are always $8 and available at the door.
Indie Wednesdays is a concept developed by Andrea Poulis, President of Sonic Deli Records. "It is an opportunity to see independent music shine and it was our objective to provide an outlet for the hundreds of talented musicians we come across in our label operations on a daily basis."
It’s been two years since Sonic Deli Records was first established by the songwriting and production team of Andrea Poulis and Jim Armstrong. With one compilation CD to their credit and another one on the way, Sonic Deli Records also sees this as a wonderful scouting opportunity for artists and future projects.
About the Artists
The Droops – The Droops are K-W's premier new wave blues-funk-rock band. Rhythmically, The Droops are based on the blues duo of Dan Alac and Chris Flannigan. Add the high-energy guitar of Tyler Smith, (formerly of punk band Tucker and The Name Game) and complete the sound with the lyrics of Alex Machidon, a poet who brings an earthy philosophy to the band.

These Electric Lives - With a common appreciation for Bloc Party, Metric, Interpol and The Postal Service, Bryan Lowe, Gary Peter, and Mark Stanfield started These Electric Lives with the common goal of becoming a cohesive unit while avoiding noise complaints from the neighbours. Now the band has developed a sound all their own, with catchy grooves, clever bass lines, finger-tapping guitars, and unique vocals from all the members combining to create a familiar yet fresh sound. These Electric Lives released their first EP, "Learn By Doing", in August 2005. They have since rounded out their line-up with two more talented musicians, Adam Balsam (drums, vocals) and Griffon March (keyboards, percussion, vocals).

Jim Armstrong and the Sonic Deli Band - The core of The Sonic Deli is Peter James (Jim) Armstrong, a multi-talented singer-songwriter whose extensive catalogue of songs is resonantly honest and from the heart. Jim's melodies and strong lyrical imagery are supported by solid grooves and are reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen, John Hiatt and Tom Petty. Since his start as a child prodigy drummer (touring from the age of 10), Jim has demonstrated his abilities as both an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and a talented producer. Jim's longtime collaboration with songwriter and business partner Andrea Poulis and bassist Wes Miller culminates in 2006 with a forthcoming solo CD on the Sonic Deli label.

DANIELLE DUVAL

Born and bred in Montreal, yet now a Torontonian, Danielle Duval is proud to introduce her rookie album; "Mornings Like This”. Rocking since the age of 14, and traveling the wide world, Danielle has led a transcendental existence in which music has slowly taken over for gravity. That's the state of mind of the music she makes, and that’s how the record was made. You'll be able to feel it when her hard and soft melodies hit your synapses in all the right places. She recently provided backing vocals on Sam Roberts’ latest album "Chemical City”, and joined the boys on stage at Live 8, The Phoenix and Le National. Danielle is now garnering all the right attention reflected by the work that Canadian greats, including Greg Keelor and Jim Creeggan, contributed to the album "Mornings Like This”.
‘Future of rock, thy name is Danielle Duval’. Get ready - the Danielle Duval Band will be appearing soon at a venue near you.

FORGERY
2005 was the year FORGERY made themselves known in the music industry. They entered the Emergenza World Music Festival, and when all was said and done, they were the Ontario champions and placed fourth in the Canadian finals. In addition, Mike, Ryan, and Kelly were all recognized for their talents throughout the contest. In the early part of the year, they won the Rock 95 (CFJB-FM, Barrie, Ontario) Local and Loud contest, securing them year-long bragging rights and a contract to record a CD at the Studio @ the Lake for Wellcraft Music Group.
Seeing the band live is to witness greatness in the making. Their spirit on stage is infectious, and has earned them the love of thousands. They've had the pleasure of opening for legendary Canadian bands such as April Wine and Chilliwack, and have shared the stage with respected Canadian acts such as Thornley and Ken Tizzard.
