THE ARTISTS:
The multi-faceted Jim Armstrong, who has had a life-long struggle with epilepsy himself, has had much success since Sonic Deli launched his solo debut Mudtown in May 2007, drawing comparisons to the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Randy Bachman and Steve Earle. He has composed music for many independent feature and corporate films as well as television (including a song on episode nine of CBC´s prime time television series, MVP; The Secret Lives of Hockey Wives). Jim is currently finishing his new album, Junction Road, due for release this summer. Jim is backed by The Sonic Deli Band which includes Jeff Beauchamp (XMen, Vince Gill, Jason McCoy) on bass, drummer Alvin Lapp, (Buddy Guy, Goo Goo Dolls, The Jayhawks), and Phil Kane (Jeff Healey, Michael Buble), on lead guitar.
Sleeps Six was founded by singer-songwriter, Pauline Groen (keyboardist with The Tribe, among others). Pauline´s first album was 2002´s Nacre and the group´s second album; Late Enough is due out this year. Now wielding guitar in addition to keys, this powerful vocalist is joined on stage by band members Sev Micron on drums (Tulpa), lead guitarist Marc Ganetakos (Nelly Furtado) and Jim Field on bass (lead guitarist for Rhea´s Obsession).

Having played in and around the GTA in cover rock and pop bands for several years and teaching music on the side, Sean soon established himself as a talented musician - the only problem was, he had yet to find a style he could call his own. Known for her "siren's voice and songwriting pearls" (the Montreal Mirror), Orit's lyrics are "truly profound" (the Suburban) and captivating. Backed up by Andre Kirchhoff's intense musicianship and harmonies, the band plays as a trio or four-piece when on tour. In Montreal they often perform with members of local band Lil' Buck, the front-man of which, Mark Goodwin is responsible for the "stellar production job" (Montreal Mirror) of Little Birdie's debut album, Cinematic Way, which was nominated for best country album in the GAMIQ (Quebec Independent Music Awards)."

Sonic Deli Records presents the third annual benefit concert in support of Epilepsy Toronto. Doors at 9:00 pm and show starts at 10:00 pm. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance by calling Andrea at Sonic Deli (416) 535-5896 or Nicole at Epilepsy TO (416) 964-9095. All proceeds will benefit Epilepsy Toronto, www.epilepsytoronto.org.
A non-profit community agency, Epilepsy Toronto is celebrating their 52nd Anniversary this March, during National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Three hundred thousand Canadians struggle with epilepsy and Sonic Deli Records partner Jim Armstrong is one of them. He has coped with it since age six, undergone state-of-the-art brain surgery to reduce seizures and continues to be a "genuine hero, an inspiration to all who are faithful to their art." - Andy Frank, CIUT. A gifted singer-songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Jim was right back at the soundboard working on his first CD compilation, only three months after his surgery. The project was released in April of 2005, and Brown Bag Lunch, a collection of songs by eleven Toronto artists, marked the beginning of independent record label, Sonic Deli Records.
The multi-faceted Armstrong has had much success since Sonic Deli launched his solo debut, the alt-roots-rock album, Mudtown last May, drawing comparisons to the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Randy Bachman and Steve Earle. He has composed music for many independent feature and corporate films and his more recent song "Sanctuary" has even been included in the soundtrack of episode nine of the new CBC prime time television series, MVP; The Secret Lives of Hockey Wives. He writes songs about real characters from everyday life, the working class hero, and sings them with the passion of a defender of the underdog. The Sonic Deli Band, which provides a more than solid foundation for that passion, includes the incredibly talented and seasoned Wes Miller on bass, drummer Alvin Lapp, (who did a 3 year stint with Buddy Guy among many others), and Phil Kane (better known as the Windsor Twister), on lead guitar.
Named after an Ontario agricultural fair in Schomberg, (their hometown), The Schomberg Fair (Matt Bahen, Nathan Sidon and Jake Stewart describe themselves as "3 handsome assholes"), do it best live. Engaging and upbeat performances of their came-by-it-honestly rural speed-gospel/folk-punk keep audiences rowdy, just the way they like it. Fast on the heels of their debut CD Pickup Full of Empties in 2006, the lads will be releasing a second CD this April at the legendary Horsehoe Tavern.
Sonic Deli Records and guest artists continue to support the goals of Epilepsy Toronto, raising awareness and bringing hope and inspiration to others.

Hard to believe that 2007 is coming to an end (already?!?) and it's been quite the year for us. Think that we shall fondly refer to 2007 as "The Launch Of All Things Mudtown".
Since the release of Jim Armstrong's CD, Mudtown last May, it has been added to the playlists of over 60 terrestrial, satellite and internet radio stations and podcasts with more to come. To date, we've received 15+ great reviews in a number of countries, plus 2 soundtrack placements with more licensing opps. to announce soon.
Jim and his Sonic Deli Band also appeared live on 3 CIUT 89.5 FM radio programs, played a number of shows and events - including NXNE - with many more coming up in 2008.
Here are the latest announcements:
Jim Armstrong's song, Happier Timeshas been included in the soundtrack for a promotional video for Canadian Music Week (CMW) 2008. The video, created and produced by the cool people of Bohagey Bowes, also includes music by fellow Canadians, Amanda Rheaume, Knocker Pot, Id Guinness and Carey Ott.
Expect to see the video on CMW's website very soon http://www.cmw.net and in the meantime, check it out here www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESCWZ7YMfoU.
Earlier this year, we told you that another Mudtown track, Hole In His Heart was licensed for All Along; a movie by Robert Angelo Masciantonio. Mudtown was recently added to the playlist of The Promise; Live365.com. Here's their excellent mini review;
"Jim Armstrong - Mudtown (2007)
Straight from the heartland... You know... Toronto, Canada. With his slightly gravely voice and straight ahead attack, this is rock and roll that makes you think of Mellencamp or even Melissa. If you close your eyes you can see these guys playing live in a small club opening for someone, when they really should be the main attraction. Good songwriting. Good sense of rock and roll. Find out more at Sonic Deli Records (love that name). "
If you love and support independent music, please take the time to check out a couple of our favourite shows:
The Soupy Gato Show (frequently voted the #1 Podcast here - please vote too if you agree!) Plus, you may request a Jim Armstrong tune anytime, as Soupy Gato's Daniel J does regular request shows.
And our homegrown fave, IndieCan Radio. The gang at IndieCan recently put out the word to call upon fellow artists/musicians/listeners to help:
"Over 30,000 listened to Episode 63. We would like 64,000 to listen to Episode 64 and 100,000 to hear # 65. So this week we ask you to get the word out. Ask your friends to tell their friends to join us. Our goal is to give these great do-it-yourself recording artists the scope of audience they deserve. This really is community radio - of the people for the people. "

There are a number of international music reviews pending of MUDTOWN; here is a brief mention on AMERICANA HOME PLACE:
"Mudtown is the debut release from Toronto singer-songwriter Jim Armstrong. Armstrong mixes a retro blues-rock foundation with Americana sensibilities. Reminiscent of the work of John Hiatt and fellow Canadian Fred Eaglesmith, Armstrong´s music has a gritty, earnest edge for fans who enjoy the rockin´ side of Americana."
Here is great mini-review of MUDTOWN on Chip Frazier´s excellent music blog, AMBER WAVES OF TWANG. Chip´s reviews are also posted on another terrific music site, TWANGVILLE. You may read the entire article here and below is the excerpt:
"Jim Armstrong - Toronto based singer - Songwriter Jim Armstrong makes his debut with Mudtown He is an accomplished producer who has worked with number of independent Canadian artists. Although the comparison may not be fair, He is clearly influenced by John Hiatt. After working all of these years with other artists he is finally releasing a solo album of his own. In fact to call it a solo album is an understatement since Armstrong wrote or Co-wrote all of the songs, produced the album and played most of the instruments himself. The result of this tightly controlled process is an infectious hook laden Americana album."
Kelly Dearmore also writes an excellent review of MUDTOWN on his music blog, THE GOBBLERS KNOB:
"A couple of days ago, I wrote about Canadian Kathleen Edwards. Then I read about other Canadian acts that are a little country and a little rock and roll. Today, I make my daily trek over to the Waves of Twang that are Amber in Color and see that he is also becoming more enamored with our chilly neighbors to the north. While we are all in the mood to inform folks about the many ways in which Canada rocks, I would like to also agree that Jim Armstrong´s latest CD, Mudtown is a worthy listen. Artist like him seem to fall into a group with early Steve Earle, Chris Knight, and even John Mellencamp when he isn´t singin´ about how trucks prove to the world that this is indeed "Our Country". I have never quite jived with such groupings, however. Chris Knight continues to bellow dark, gothic tunes of murder and betrayal while he stays as far away from the mainstream as he seemingly can. Early Earle is a far cry from the latest incarnation of the Hard-Core Troubadour, and like I said earlier Mellencamp is belting out jingles these days. I concur with Chip´s John Hiatt comparison over any other attempt to offer fans of a certain artist a suitable alternative. What struck me the most about Mudtown was how the disc seemed to effortlessly transition from bluesy-rockers like "Heaven Only Knows" and softer, more thoughtful alt-country tunes such as "I´m Coming Home". This disc was released on Sonic Deli Records, in which Armstrong is a key player..." read the original here.

And this excellent review of MUDTOWN written by Bert Gagnon of Neon Radio Productions & Musictogousa.com
"Jim Armstrong's "Mudtown" cd has long been awaited by many of his fans and for good reason. This artist has demonstrated precision and technical expertise beyond what is expected coupled with strong songwriting skills that transcends his chosen genre of Americana. Mudtown's eclectic styling incorporates some of music's best genres, Americana/Roots/Rock and Jim also throws splashes of Blues into this five star cd. Even though this cd has eclectic qualities, it remains within context, as there isn't any element that competes against each other. So what you hear is extremely high quality songs that you will certainly enjoy for a long time. Key tracks are "Heaven Only Knows", "Mudtown", "Hole In His Heart" and "Rhythm Of The Moon". Even though this is Jim Armstrong's first solo album, Jim is no novice to the music arena and it is very apparent as he has hit a homerun his first time out. Here is another artist that will be on our playlists for many years. Here´s the original:
So many new Radio Stations & Podcast Shows have added (or are about to add) songs from Jim Armstrong's album, Mudtown to their playlists. Please treat your ears and check some of them out. We´re very happy to send you to this link: http://www.partyinkingston.com/music/reviews-jimarmstrong.html to read a wonderful review of MUDTOWN by the publisher of PartyInKingston.Com, Chris White. Chris comments, "This was truly one of my favourite albums to review."
Two more reviews of Mudtown come from that hotbed of Alt-Country & Americana music appreciation; The Netherlands! We´re working on getting the English translations to post here on our Sonic Deli Records website but in the meantime go to this link for a brand new review of Mudtown @ http://www.rootstime.be. Freddy Celis of Roots Time tells me that if they gave out horses (stars) with their reviews, Jim Armstrong and Mudtown would receive 4.5 (out of 5)!

Finally, here´s an English translation kindly provided by Johanna J. Bodde of the www.altcountry.nl review of Mudtown by Rene Leverink:
Translation review AltCountryNL
Jim Armstrong "Mudtown"
"An old soul, wet behind the ears. The freshman veteran rookie old
timer of the year." I couldn't track down HOW old Jim Armstrong is
exactly, but he's indeed getting gray already and yet "Mudtown" is his
debut album. Jim Armstrong is a singer-songwriter,
multi-instrumentalist and producer, all of this for several decades.
He runs -together with Andrea Poulis- the Toronto based indie label
Sonic Deli Records. Finally he found the time to make his own CD. And
let's not beat around the bush: "Mudtown" is a beautiful record, and
one would ask why it had to take so long before Armstrong dared to do
his own thing.
The first track "Heaven Only Knows" hits the target immediately, with
a deep slurring electric guitar, that sucks us inexorably into the wet
misery of New Orleans: "Through windows of broken glass I was outside
looking in at a kingdom made of sand; where the cities flood and
desert begins". Steaming soul, stamping rock and thrilling blues in
one package. Immediately thereafter prize track two follows: title
song "Mudtown", that presented itself to Armstrong during his long
walks through Toronto, with his two huge German shepherds Seizure and
Dolby. Toronto, where life isn't easy, but it always offers
opportunities: "This is no paradise, but there's possibility. A man
could plant himself here."
Well, also otherwise Armstrong knows very well how to put an album
together, how to do almost the whole accompaniment by his lonesome,
and when to ask for a real specialist, like Kenji Miura on electric
guitar in "Heaven Only Knows" and "When It Rains", a prize track
AGAIN, damn!

In other news, Jim Armstrong and MUDTOWN just received an excellent review on the AltCountry.nl website in the Netherlands (where Jim & MUDTOWN received 4 out of 5 mustang horses!) If anyone speaks Dutch and can translate properly we'd love to know what was actually written. http://altcountry.nl/recensiesjul07.html
In the meantime, we have been keeping ourselves quite amused reading the various versions after running them through the free on-line translation software sites.
And we're thrilled to finally be able to announce that Jim's MUDTOWN track, Happier Times, has been included in Episode #75 of AmericanaOK @ Leith FM, broadcasting out of Edinburgh, Scotland via www.leithfm.co.uk and in New Zealand on Radio Goldrush 1440. Catch it in podcast form here: http://americanaok.libsyn.com Host Tom Fahey has one of the finest shows in the world for airing Americana, Roots-rock and alt-country music. Treat yourself to something excellent today.
*News Flash* this just in - another song from Jim Armstrong's MUDTOWN is featured on this week's AmericanaOK broadcast! Show #76 http://americanaok.libsyn.com
AmericanaOK host Tom Fahey says [of the album MUDTOWN] "...this album is a real grower...that's a very beautiful song there, Tomorrow's Gonna Be Grand, from a very fine album indeed.
Last but not least, here in Toronto, there is another fine radio programme, Back To The Sugar Camp with host, Steve Fruitman on CIUT 89.5 FM (Thursdays @ 6:00pm). Steve played Jim Armstrong's MUDTOWN track, Two Shooting Stars on the July 5th broadcast. But never fear, you can catch the show in podcast form anytime you'd like by clicking here www.backtothesugarcamp.com and going to show #376.

JIM ARMSTRONG CD RELEASE CONCERT FOR "MUDTOWN" -THE CADILLAC LOUNGE, 1296 QUEEN STREET W, 8PM
Thursday March 29th, 2007 - TORONTO - Jim Armstrong releases his debut full-length CD through Sonic Deli Records on Thursday May 10th at the Cadillac Lounge, 1296 Queen Street West. Doors open at 7:30pm, with an opening set by Grainne Ryan starting at 8pm. Jim Armstrong will perform two shows. Early show begins at 8:30pm, late show starts at 10pm. Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling 416.535.5896.
"Mudtown" music is catchy, straight-ahead alt-roots-rock that shoots from the hip and aims at the heart. The title and driving spirit of the disk were born during Jim's wanderings through downtown Toronto, where he lives, works and walks his dogs. Jim explains that "Life can be dirty, rough and mean, but there's a breed of people who struggle against the grind and somehow keep their humanity. They don't get hard, like the city, and that's what makes Mudtown liveable."
"Jim is a genuine hero, an inspiration to all who are faithful to their art." - (Andy Frank, CIUT) He defends the underdog through his music by dispelling the modern myth of perfection. This is an album that the working class will understand. He writes songs about real characters from everyday life and sings their stories with the passion of a Springsteen or Eaglesmith.
Jim Armstrong will be joined on stage by his full band, Wes Miller (bass), Alvin Lapp (drums), Rob Maurin (backing vocals and rhythym), Phil Kane (Lead guitar) and Debbie Shessel (backing vocals).

July 13- News Update-
NEW INDIE MUSIC HOTSPOT, MONTHLY SHOWCASE SERIES
AT STONES PLACE, 1255 QUEEN ST. W., WEDNESDAY, JULY 26th, 9:30 PM
July 12th - Toronto, ON - Sonic Deli Records presents Indie Wednesdays at Stones Place (1255 Queen Street West) on Wednesday, July 26th, 9:30 p.m. This is a new monthly music series that showcases local and touring artists and songwriters from all genres on the last Wednesday of every month. Hosted by The Jim Armstrong Band, the July installment also includes The Droops and These Electric Lives. Music begins at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are always $8 and available at the door.
Indie Wednesdays is a concept developed by Andrea Poulis, President of Sonic Deli Records. "It is an opportunity to see independent music shine and it was our objective to provide an outlet for the hundreds of talented musicians we come across in our label operations on a daily basis."
It’s been two years since Sonic Deli Records was first established by the songwriting and production team of Andrea Poulis and Jim Armstrong. With one compilation CD to their credit and another one on the way, Sonic Deli Records also sees this as a wonderful scouting opportunity for artists and future projects.
About the Artists
The Droops – The Droops are K-W's premier new wave blues-funk-rock band. Rhythmically, The Droops are based on the blues duo of Dan Alac and Chris Flannigan. Add the high-energy guitar of Tyler Smith, (formerly of punk band Tucker and The Name Game) and complete the sound with the lyrics of Alex Machidon, a poet who brings an earthy philosophy to the band.

http://www.thedroops.com
These Electric Lives - With a common appreciation for Bloc Party, Metric, Interpol and The Postal Service, Bryan Lowe, Gary Peter, and Mark Stanfield started These Electric Lives with the common goal of becoming a cohesive unit while avoiding noise complaints from the neighbours. Now the band has developed a sound all their own, with catchy grooves, clever bass lines, finger-tapping guitars, and unique vocals from all the members combining to create a familiar yet fresh sound. These Electric Lives released their first EP, "Learn By Doing", in August 2005. They have since rounded out their line-up with two more talented musicians, Adam Balsam (drums, vocals) and Griffon March (keyboards, percussion, vocals).

http://www..theseelectriclives.com )
Jim Armstrong and the Sonic Deli Band - The core of The Sonic Deli is Peter James (Jim) Armstrong, a multi-talented singer-songwriter whose extensive catalogue of songs is resonantly honest and from the heart. Jim's melodies and strong lyrical imagery are supported by solid grooves and are reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen, John Hiatt and Tom Petty. Since his start as a child prodigy drummer (touring from the age of 10), Jim has demonstrated his abilities as both an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and a talented producer. Jim's longtime collaboration with songwriter and business partner Andrea Poulis and bassist Wes Miller culminates in 2006 with a forthcoming solo CD on the Sonic Deli label.

Rocking since the age of 14, and traveling the wide world, Danielle has led a transcendental existence in which music has slowly taken over for gravity. That's the state of mind of the music she makes, and that’s how the record was made. You'll be able to feel it when her hard and soft melodies hit your synapses in all the right places. She recently provided backing vocals on Sam Roberts’ latest album "Chemical City”, and joined the boys on stage at Live 8, The Phoenix and Le National. Danielle is now garnering all the right attention reflected by the work that Canadian greats, including Greg Keelor and Jim Creeggan, contributed to the album "Mornings Like This”.
‘Future of rock, thy name is Danielle Duval’. Get ready - the Danielle Duval Band will be appearing soon at a venue near you.

THE DROOPS:
“If you’re looking for a fresh, funky sound then look down in the south of Ontario. The Droops are K-W’s premier new wave blues-funk-rock band, turning ordinary concerts into parties.
Rhythmically, the Droops are based on the Blues duo of Dan Alac and Chris Flannigan, both having graced numerous Open Jams in the K-W region, as well as the “Blues, Brews & Barbeques” Festival put on by the city of Kitchener. Weave in the hi-energy guitar skills of Tyler Smith (formerly of Tucker, Name Game) and then add the lyrics of singer, Alex Machidon.
From intimate venues (U of Waterloo’s Grad House) to popular bars (Fiddler’s Green in Cambridge) to festivals (Kitchener’s “Unity Jam”, New Hamburg’s “Bridging the Gap”) the Droops can play any crowd, anytime, anywhere.”

News Update April 2, 2006-
Sonic Deli Records' Benefit Concert in Support of Epilepsy Toronto last Friday evening at STONES PLACE was a huge success! Jerry Stone is the ultimate host and his extraordinary club, STONES PLACE is a "must see venue. Everyone in attendance loved the ambience as much as they enjoyed the show.
And what a show it was; many people came out to hear the bands and to support a worthy cause. Thank you to all those in attendance; we made some new fans, had a chance to welcome long-time fans, friends and family members and gave them a show that everyone will remember for a long time to come.
The evening's first performer, Amer Diab and his band caught the audience's attention with their first note and it never stopped. Amer is a singer-songwriter whose beautifully crafted songs pull you into a world populated by the love-lorn, the gritty streets, the beautiful, the sad and the happy-go-lucky. From rocking to haunting and back again, Amer is always entertaining. www.amerdiab.ca Go to Amer's site for more info on his up-coming shows and his new CD release party in May.
Violet Ray and her awesome backing musicians were next to take the stage and kept that music coming! Mix great songs with some bluesy, rootsy and rockin' twang; serve it up with a voice best described as "whiskey-velvet-on-the-rocks, and voila, you have Violet Ray. A great second set for all to enjoy. www.violetray.com
Third man out, was Jim Armstrong and the Sonic Deli Band. Undoubtedly, the evening belonged to Jim and the band. They rocked the joint for close to an hour with one great tune after another. They were tight, they were having fun and they took the audience along for the ride. And what a ride! Jim had the crowd tapping, clapping, stomping, laughing and singing along, while Wes Miller on bass, Doug Francis on drums, Val Oddo on lead guitar, Rob Maurin on rhythm guitar and singing backing vocals along with Debbie Shessel, wowed that crowd. It was an incredible set that seemed to end far too soon. www.sonicdelirecords.com / www.myspace.com/jimarmstrongsonicdeliband
Fortunately, next up was….the Sonic Deli band again, backing singer-songwriter, Rob Maurin. Rob is a wonderful singer who has lent his vocal talents to many projects over the years (including lots at "the Deli) and he finally had his moment to shine in the spotlight, where he debuted some of his original songs, and was ably backed by singer Debbie Shessel. Meanwhile, Debbie Shessel, in spite of a having a bad cold, let everyone hear her loose that powerhouse voice of hers to end this set with a great rendition of "Wanna Be The One from the Brown Bag Lunch CD. Look to hear lots more from these two accomplished artists.
Finally, to close out a really successful evening - our "white knights, the special "mystery guests – Crazy Babies & friends who were able to come in as a last minute replacement for Petrolia. (Unfortunately, Samantha, the lead singer for Petrolia was ill and the band was forced to cancel the gig. We hope to bring them back for a show very soon.) Lead singer Rod Clarke and Crazy Babies performed a great set; some originals, a little Ozzy & Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, you name it, they played it! It was an awesome end to a terrific evening. Thank you Rod, Ron, Dave, Jon, Colin and gang.
The evening was a success due in part, to the excellent work of sound technician, Mark Mallett. You'll be able to hear some of the concert highlights on Tuesday, April 18th at 9:00pm (repeats the following Monday at 1:00pm) on Andy Frank's IT'S (A)LIVE – CIUT 89.5 FM. You may also listen on-line at www.ciut.fm
Thank you to Nicole Nelson of Epilepsy Toronto, Jennifer Claveau & Lori Bruce of SPEAKmusic, Jon Long and Long & McQuade, Andy Frank & CIUT 89.5 FM, Jerry Stone and all the staff at Stones Place, Mark Mallett, Amer, Violet, Jim, Wes, Doug, Val, Rob, Debbie, Rod, Ron, Dave, Colin, Johanna, Bep and to everyone else who came out to the Benefit Concert!

20/05
Hello friends of Sonic Deli:
We have lots of new things to report; updates in the “where to purchase”
column on the left hand side of this home page, in our “about us”
section, the “current projects” section, the links page and
the “services” section.
Anticipation is running high as we wait for the new photographs of Jim
Armstrong and the Sonic Deli Band to arrive.
Photographer, Ingram Barrs (or Ingram the Incredible, as we’ve nicknamed
him) has captured Jim and the gang beautifully. Ingram’s work is
intuitive and quite remarkable. He can be contacted via Don Dixon Film
& Photography at www.dixonfilm.com
. So keep checking back; the pictures will be posted soon.
Speaking of Jim Armstrong and the Sonic Deli Band, they are now lining
up gigs throughout the GTA and are performing an extensive catalogue of
Jim’s and the Sonic Deli’s material. This is a talented, solid
band that has a lot of rockin’ fun and really great songs. Stay
tuned for info on where to see them live. (Check the “About Us”
section for more info on the Sonic Deli Band)
Other tidbits; the radio tracking campaign for various tracks off Brown
Bag Lunch is launching, along with a new Sonic Bids EPK, and My Space
pages, etc. Some of the songs are being purchased individually off the
digital sites (i.e., Lazo’s Love Is on Your Side via Apple
iTunes, etc.) Both CIUT 89.5 fm and CBC’s various radio shows have
played Jim Armstrong’s Angel In Our Corner, Hole In
His Heart; Jennifer Claveau’s Together We’re Alone;
and sung by Jennifer Bettencourt, Sonic Deli’s Taxi Cab Heart;
The Entropy’s Josh Hutchinson with Take You and dAVID jANES’
Beautiful. Actually, Beautiful alone, has had over 1,000
plays on dAVID jANES’ myspace.com site. CBC’s satellite station,
Galaxie has also played Josh’s Take You, and dAVID’s Invisible
as well.
Potential soundtrack placements for various tracks from BROWN
BAG LUNCH are looking good; will announce as they become
solidified. Also, lots happening for some of the BBL artists – check
their individual websites for more info.
September
27/05- Thank
you to those loyal friends and fans that came out to the “Roots
Rockin’ Showcase” on Saturday night.
AMER DIAB, one of this
city’s finest singer-songwriters, opened the show with his usual
witty charm, easy stage presence and wonderful songs. If you haven’t
had a chance to catch Amer’s act (solo or full band), don’t
deny yourself the pleasure any longer. Check his website for upcoming
shows http://www.amerdiab.ca
VIOLET RAY was a last
minute cancellation due to a family emergency. We apologize to her fans
for any disappointment, and extend our best wishes to her and her family
at this time. Come on out again soon Violet Ray. http://www.violetray.com
Fortunately, Pete and Lora Judge (Blue Canoe) stepped in at the
last minute and performed an acoustic set of well-crafted roots/bluesy/folk
pop songs. They were real troopers and we thank them very much.
JIM ARMSTRONG AND THE SONIC DELI BAND (Wes
Miller, Val Oddo, Doug Francis, Bep Schippers and Rob Maurin) performed
the night’s most “rockin” set. Kinda country, kinda
roots, kinda rock – it was a feel-good, boisterous performance by
everyone on stage and highly enjoyed by everyone there. Stay tuned for
a lot more chances to check Jim and gang out – coming soon to a
venue near you. You are in for a treat. http://www.sonicdelirecords.com
Heading into the final hour of the evening, Jamie Gutfreund and Jon Jacobson
of The Soulution, popped into the club and took a turn on stage to perform
some of their cool tunes. Keep an eye open for these two incredibly talented
young men in future. http://www.solutionmusic.com
And finally, by request, we were treated to a sublime version of Lyle
Lovett’s She’s No Lady, She’s My Wife performed by the
one and only Rob Maurin. Now that boy can sing!

Congratulations to

The heart and soul of all things musical at the Sonic Deli,
JIM ARMSTRONG takes the stage at 11:30 pm. He’s
a man of many hats; producer, engineer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist,
singer-songwriter and performer – whew! Come and check out a guy
who couldn’t write a crappy song if his life depended on it. Four
of the songs Jim will perform can be found on Sonic Deli’s BROWN
BAG LUNCH and you’ll have a chance to hear a whole
lot more. He’s backed by the wonderful Sonic Deli House Band; a
great crew of players and artists in their own right – Wes Miller
on bass, Val Oddo on lead guitar, Doug Francis on drums, Jim on rhythm
guitar & harmonica, Bep Schippers and Rob Maurin on back up vocals.
Look for the Sonic Deli Band to keep the music going until closing time
with some special guest performances too. In between all of Jim’s
writing and producing duties, he’s hard at work compiling his anticipated
solo debut CD on the Sonic Deli Records label. Title and release date:

The Sonic Deli Podcast.
Sonic Deli artists will be at the Black Swan on Saturday, September 24,
2005; line-up TBA.
In the meantime, you can catch most of them as they perform in and around
the city, province, country or continent!
LAZO,
along with his band, The Radikals, kick-started the year with a performance
at Carnival in Brazil. Now the busy Juno winner and top reggae artist
can be found this summer at Caribana, the C.N.E. and beyond – all
over Ontario, Quebec and New York State. For details please visit his http://www.lazomusic.com
JENNIFER
CLAVEAU of the band, Likewater, has been playing
a number of prestigious concerts and festivals this year, including the
Mariposa Folk Festival. Look for her and Likewater at this September’s
City Roots City Wide Festival in the Distillery district, among others.
Major happenings on the horizon…. http://www.likewater.net
AMER DIAB has been recording his new CD, the follow-up to his critically praised,
The Year of The Apology. This took him away from his usually very busy
performance schedule for the past few months, but we are happy to report
that he has been gearing back up; Amer was recently on Andy Frank’s
The First Word – CIUT 89.5 FM discussing and playing some of his
new songs. http://www.amerdiab.ca
VIOLET RAY
is poised to release her new CD, as well. Having heard a sneak preview
of the tracks which were recorded in Nashville last year, we can hardly
wait! This woman, her voice and songs are sublime. And can she rock!?!
Better believe it.http://www.violetray.com
SHELLEY JACOBSON hardly ever has a moment to swing through Toronto anymore, and while we’d
love to see more of her, we are thrilled that she is signed to Nashville’s
Full Court Press publishing company. This wonderful singer-songwriter
has amassed so many awards, cuts and holds, that they are far too numerous
to list here; check out Thunder Bay’s very own Nashville-commuting,
wonder woman at http://www.shellsong.com
JOSH HUTCHINSON and The Entropy – what can we say? These are some of the nicest,
hardest working and talented young men that we have ever had the pleasure
to work with. They are intense and rock very, very hard. And they have
an incredible, loyal legion of fans. Check out their tour schedule, tracks
and their cool video at http://www.theentropy.ca
dAVID jANES is here in the studio, recording his first solo CD debut and putting the
finishing touches on compiling his touring band. He has many, many fans
eagerly awaiting this CD; his website has had thousands of hits in just
a few short months and on his Myspace.com page, the 4 singles from BROWN
BAG LUNCH are receiving lots of plays – BEAUTIFUL is promising to
be a runaway hit! Stay tuned for a lot more from this young man. http://www.davebjanes.com
CRAZY BABIES continue to rock this summer; here, there and everywhere, doing their
wonderful OZZY/SABBATH act and promoting their new CD release of originals.
The band line-up(s), past and present are a real who’s who of Canadian
rock talent – check them out at http://www.crazybabies.com
DEBBIE
SHESSEL is currently being claimed and consumed by
the corporate world, but we hope to get her back, safe and sound very
soon! Work is about to resume on a number of tracks and the stages of
Toronto shall once again be graced with her wonderful sense of humour
and powerful voice.
JENNIFER
BETTENCOURT she of that big, pure and exquisite voice
housed in such a delightfully, bubbly persona and diminutive body, is
concentrating on her post-secondary education for this coming year. But
just like Tinkerbelle, if we all let her know how much we’re gonna
miss her, she’ll get the message and share all that talent with
the world upon her graduation ;-)
JIM ARMSTRONG
of The Sonic Deli Inc. & Sonic Deli Records, continues
to produce, record, write and perform – he and The Sonic Deli House
Band are gearing up for a number of dates – keep checking back for
more information as it becomes available. The Sonic Deli Band is comprised
of a number of talented musicians, multi-instrumentalists & singer-songwriters
who mix and match it up as required; Wes Miller, Val Oddo, Ron Bechard,
Jon Long, Rob Maurin, Doug Francis, Bep, Jim Armstrong, Josh Penslar,
Deb Shessel, Andrea Poulis – well, all the aforementioned artists
too, actually…. You get the idea; a collective of talented friends
and peers making great music - that is what The Sonic Deli and Sonic Deli
Records are all about.

two newest members of the dAVID jANES/ Sonic Deli house band. They are
joining Jim Armstrong (drums), Ron Bechard (guitar) & Wes Miller (bass).
The first official gig with the complete band happened this past Saturday,
June 4th at the Bloorcourt Heritage Street Festival - dAVID jANES performed
for a good crowd and made more new fans! It was a great opportunity to
showcase some of the excellent material from his forthcoming solo CD debut,
THIS IS ME. (Not to mention getting 21st Birthday Hugs & Kisses from
all the pretty girls) Then Jim Armstrong switched from drums to guitar
and sang a good selection of his wonderful songs. Backing Jim on drums
- Doug Francis. Thank you Doug. And thank you Josh, for back up vocals.
Good show guys.
Thanks also to the Bloorcourt Biz Association, Jon Long and Long &

BROWN BAG LUNCH Sonic Deli _***
If straight-ahead, Q107-style radio rock bore more critical currency
than lo-fi indie pop, Sonic Deli's un-broken social scene, documented
on this label compilation, would be the one we're hearing about. The focal
point of a loose community of struggling musicians, Sonic Deli is a recording
studio/house band/indie label/music publishing company helmed by veteran
local rocker Jim Armstrong. Nothing on Brown Bag Lunch is brilliant but
nothing sucks. Armstrong himself crafts serviceable, catchy, blue-collar
rock; David Janes brings strong vocals and rock-star attitude to the party;
Amer Diab's quirkier approach breaks the rawkin' mold (and mood) somewhat.
So do tracks recorded outside the Deli and parachuted in by reggae man
Lazo and garage-band Crazy Babies. Extra points for Armstrong starting
to record the project three months after undergoing brain surgery to control
his epilepsy. HOWARD DRUCKMAN

Sonic Deli Records is seeking a versatile keyboardist and a second
guitar player for immediate rehearsals, gigging and showcases.
Possible studio work in future for the right person. Backing vocals an
asset. Must have own transportation and equipment.
Be prepared for frequent, hard work and bring a smile with friendly, professional
attitude. Contact Andrea or Jim for an audition at sonicdeli@sympatico.ca
